Permaculture Food Forest

There are some serious difficulties gardening in an area where the ground freezes a foot deep most of the year, but amazingly enough, “life ugh finds a way”.

So I bought all these delicious perrenial seeds and threw them in the ground and just a year later I have a good forest. Then the dream ended to Skye barking and I woke up to the reality that I’ve have struggled (like zero success) to plant directly from seed “direct sow”, apparently this is not how the pros do it and I need to step my game up to indoor starts and transplants. Life ugh needs some help haha.

I have 33 acres of forest land in zone 7a type of temperatures and only 12″ of annual rainfall. Most of the land is quite steep which makes working it especially difficult. I have cut in some terraced areas and successfully planted some cherry and apple trees! This was a much needed victory and on my YouTube channel I show the first tree I ever planted.

Next I wanted to establish some cold hardy perennial edibles. Like fruit trees they should continue to produce food for me and the many animals who live on my property in perpituity. The list of cold hardy edible perennials I have tried:

  • Asparagus
  • Alpine strawberry
  • Thornless Blackberry
  • Blueberry
  • Raspberry
  • Serviceberry
  • Black Salsify
  • Moso Bamboo
  • To Be Continued…
